Mochos (pronounced Mohòs) lies 400 metres above sea level, 45.8 km from Heraklion. It has approximately 1,155 permanent residents.
The first inhabitants are thought to have been monks living in various monasteries where the village now stands.
However, the first references to it as Mochos, in Venetian censuses, confirm its long history.
The inhabitants are mainly farmers and shepherds. The village is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and fruit trees and produces top-quality olive oil, grapes and wine.
The heart of the village is the paved square planted with trees, ringed by tavernas, cafeterias, shops, an old church, bakeries and old houses.
Visitors can rest, chat with the hospitable local inhabitants or stroll through the picturesque alleyways with their pretty old houses and churches.
Other sights worth seeing are the local churches and areas of natural beauty.
